Strange Stringy Shroom

Brisk afternoon walk today.  I saw plenty of geese and ducks but no turtles today.  And very few insects.  There was a small beetle on the pavement and a couple immature milkweed bugs still around.  Accustomed to seeing them in groups, these little ones looked orphaned.

I've been watching a fungi on a tree that looks rather strange from the back.  First the front:

Seems to look common enough.  Now look at the back:
