Something High and Something Low

The park is sporting a new powdering of snow.  Today I spotted something on a branch high in a tree - a downy ... (or perhaps hairy?)  woodpecker.  It is hard to judge the size from a distance and the two are virtually identical in plumage with the only difference being size.

These birds are acrobats, often pecking upside down.  The bark on the branch in the distance has seen woodpecker handiwork.

The extra coat of snow (just over 2 inches overnight) was somewhat discouraging.  Temperatures are supposed to be on the rise.  Found some buds on a tree branch near the ground.  They are bulging to the point of splitting - providing a hopeful sign of spring.

Hope you enjoyed!

  1. Great pics. I love outdoors photography, and do some myself. Thanks for inviting me to come by and look!

  2. I go back and forth on what it might be. Without seeing the beak it is doubly hard. So, it'll remain a mystery... :)

  3. I'm pretty sure this is a downy. She has her neck twisted and is looking up in the picture. I catch them clinging and pecking UNDER branches - very acrobatic - which would point to downy.
