The wind was gusty and they were flying this way and that.
And flew away.
What were they? American Pelicans. They migrate through.

Migrating Vistors Passing Through
At the start of my walk, I noticed a large group of new birds flying over. I didn't know what they were at first.
Eventually they started forming again.
