A number of Heath Aster are blooming. Looking at these might remind you of spring, but these are a fall flower.
Near the ponds further up the street, a field of goldenrod have strange globes on their stems. These are actually Galls. They are formed from the activity of special insects. Usually egg laying or eating causes a reaction in the plant forming these globes. Likely, a fat larvae is inside. It will winter there. Because this is formed on a goldenrod, it is likely that this houses a goldenrod gall fly larvae. A young woman was looking for these for what looked like a school project.
Enjoy!
