Near the playground parking lot on the street side grows a pine tree. There are a number of gnarled looking patches that are due to disturbance. Her sap flows to protect herself.
What could be causing such distress? Evidence points to Cicadas. They feed on tree sap. One of their favorites is Cypress. They emerge from the ground when nearly full grown and molt their last time. The photo below is what is left of a Cicadas abandoned exoskeleton.
These are long lived insects. They can live up to 17 years. The variety near this tree most likely has a 2-5 year life cycle.
