Shy and Not so Shy

In the lake, often several feet from shore, a lone waterfowl appears and disappears with a dive.  Rarely has this bird been close enough to photograph for identification.  Today was an exception.

This is a Pied-billed Grebe.  This is an interesting but shy bird and rarely seen in flight.  They migrate, but do so in the night.  Although it swims like a duck, their feet are not webbed.  Each toe has lobes on the sides that give extra surface for swimming.  Click the link for more information.
