More Spring Arrivals

 Jack-in-the-pulpits are starting to come up.  Large-flowered Bellwort are coming up too.  The flower will droop downward once the flower opens.  



Found a couple of Six Spotted Tiger Beetles playing along the marsh road.






But also an invader is starting to blossom.  Pretty as the Garlic Mustard is, it spreads easy and can take over areas quickly.  I've read they are edible!

Fresh in the Forest

Large Flowered Bellwort and Jack-in-the-pulpits can now be found along the path in the forest.

Jack-in-the-Pulpits Emerging

Jack-in-the-Pulpits are starting to unfurl.  There is a patch along the marsh road at the wettest areas opposite the marsh.  This is another plant that is male or female.  Some people call the female "Jill".  This plant also has a unique species 'safety' function.  It may switch between male and female for a season to better chances of reproduction. Watch for this interesting plant to start unfurling its leaves.

Jack is Turning Red

Jack-in-the-pulpits have formed fruit.  Along the marsh road the berries are bright red.  The fruit might be tempting, but don't give in, it is poison.  Some Indian tribes have developed a process to render this plant's poison harmless, but it is a process that takes a long time.  Not exactly on my list of things to try.  ;-)

Along one of the forest dirt paths, a number of Jack-in-the-Pulpits are emerging.  Not far away, what looks like  Trillium are also showing their leaves.
