Winter Wildflowers

Many wildflowers keep some beauty in winter.  Above is Monarda Fistulosa (Wild Bergamot).  The  Silphium laciniatum (Compass Plant) flower to the right is nearly gone, but still has some semblance of her former bloom.  And the Parthenium Integrifolium (Wild Quinine) below displays an interesting texture when dried.  She is on the state endangered species list.  Many of these have been picked over to some extent by birds wintering nearby.

Enjoy!

Summer Start of Surrender

Signs of Summer's wear are seen in flowers and milkweed and even in the wings of dragonflies.  In a matter of weeks, she will give way to a new season, autumn.

Bird's Favorite

Compass Plant is the clear winner in the 'Bird's Favorite Wildflower Food' category.  Most are simply stubs compared to the above photo.  In years past, the Purple Coneflower was close in the running.

Enjoy!
