Winter Wildflowers

Many wildflowers keep some beauty in winter.  Above is Monarda Fistulosa (Wild Bergamot).  The  Silphium laciniatum (Compass Plant) flower to the right is nearly gone, but still has some semblance of her former bloom.  And the Parthenium Integrifolium (Wild Quinine) below displays an interesting texture when dried.  She is on the state endangered species list.  Many of these have been picked over to some extent by birds wintering nearby.

Enjoy!

Summer Natives in Macro

The park has scattered patches of Wild Quinine along the creek.  This unusual flower is on the state endangered list.  They seem to be doing well at the park.  A more common native is also starting to dance onto the scene: Purple Prairie Clover.  And lining the lake at the park are Prairie Dogbane.

Summer nearly here!

Spiderwort are blooming.  Wild Quinine are starting to show their flowers.  And Goat's beard are beginning to open as well.  All signs that summer is nearly here!

Enjoy!

Wild Quinine and Purple Milkweed

Have you noticed the bouquets of pearls growing along the creek path?  These are Wild Quinine and have no petals.

There are several varieties of milkweeds at the park.  I think this one may be Purple Milkweed.  It grows behind the soccer field along the creek.

Enjoy!
