Grasshopper Shenanigans

Found these little guys in a playful mood on Sunday.  I pulled out a reflective disk to experiment with my photography.  I have not mastered it yet, but this little guy decided to play on it.

Near the first bridge, I spied this guy hiding behind some Goat's Beard seed parachutes.

Enjoy!

Sunday Findings

The False Solomon's Seal is starting to end.  Most can be found in the forest.  Some can be seen along the forest edge near the first bridge.
Canada Anemone are popping up along the lake shoreline near the bridge outlet.

Tall buttercup and American Vetch can be found along the marsh road.

And near Winnetka Avenue, found this Red Clover.  I believe that is a baby grasshopper hiding among the petals.

Enjoy!

How Many Eyes Does a Grasshopper Have?

Many of the grasshoppers at the park are now full grown.   Grasshoppers are very different than us.  They don't have eyes like we do.  They have two compound eyes.  That means they have many facets.  To us, it would be like looking through a bundle of straws.  Aside from these two eyes, adults have three other tiny eyes called simple eyes.  These mostly just discern light and dark.  That makes ... FIVE eyes!

Did you guess right?

Baby BABY Grasshoppers

This grasshopper nymph is enjoying the early morning sun.  It is no bigger than a fruit fly right now, probably in its first stage.

Curious Combination

This photo was something of an accident.  I did not initially see the grasshopper or the web.  I found the elements a curious combination.

Should be a beautiful day.  Enjoy!

Labor Day Overflow

The grasshoppers are nearly all grown up now.  When they fly, they really fly and might be mistaken for a moth or butterfly.  This one found a place to rest under a patch of flowers.  Butterflies and bees shared his place.

Enjoy!
