Damsels

There are many damselflies congregating just off the lake shore in the tall grass.  Most of these are some kind of bluet.

In the photo above, how many damselflies can you find?  I see nine!

Giganteus!

This pretty yellow native wildflower almost always has the sky as her background.  She is a Helianthus Giganteus, also known as a Giant Sunflower.  These grow from 4 to 10 feet tall, though I wonder if these may be taller.

Against the Fence

Against the back baseball fence, not far from the Queen Anne's Lace, are some Blue Lobelia.

Tailed Blue

Those dainty little blue and white butterflies are called Eastern Blue-tailed Butterfly.  See the little tail on the bottom wing?  When the wings are spread, the boys are blue, but the females are slate grey.

Snow Storm is Over

The day after is beautiful.  The ball park benches are piled with nearly a foot of white.  Lovely to look at, but not wonderful to drive in.

Morning Flight Practice

It seems in spring and summer Canadian geese are busy with young and more in the ground than in the air.  Now that summer is past and the young ones are grown, they are more in the air.

"Anti-Divorce" Remedy

Blue Lobelia are in bloom around the creek.  They are not easy to find, hidden below the brush.  This plant has had many interesting uses among Native Americans.  Perhaps the most unusual is that of the Meskwaki Native Americans.  They believed this plant to be an anti-divorce remedy.
