Caught a Coot

The lake ice melted away over the weekend.  Caught an American Coot on camera today.  The coot is not exactly a duck - rather more like a sand crane.  

This afternoon has been cold (less than 40F) and windy - dipping below freezing in the night.  There is snow in the forecast.

Winter Blow-back

Nearly all of the snow has melted.  It is nice to be able to walk the lake path again.  The The Red-winged blackbirds can be heard trilling their happiness.   How nice to gorgeous weather after the harsh winter. 




The lake ice is weakening, but still covers most of the lake.  The midweek warm-up might be the breaking blow.

Icy Outlet

Temperatures will not get above freezing today.   Icicles are forming at the lake outlet.  Temperatures don't look to be above freezing for several days.  For those of us in denial, (like me) winter is at the door, and she is not going away anytime soon!

Beaver Bubbles?

Although I do not know the hows, I found it curious that bubbles in the lake have frozen at various depths.  I've heard a number of witnesses claim there are beavers at this end of the lake.  

I little warmer out there today.

November Warm-up

Temperatures heated since my last post.  Even at sunrise, the glazed ice can barely be found around the edges.

Ducklings!

Heard some chirping along the creek peninsula.  These little guys were roaming about looking lost.  The mother Mallard Duck flew in and and called them to order.  Some came running so fast, they ran on TOP of the water.  This is the first batch of ducklings I've found this year.  Maybe you saw some earlier?
