Early November Snow

Today the snow picked up again.  The white lines in the above tree line are falling snow.  The weather has been cold and snowy for the past week.  Time to unpack the long johns and legwarmers!

The peninsula is lit up white with the suns falling rays. Milkweeds are not the only fall whites.

Rattlesnake Master

The spiky balls of Rattlesnake Master soften as they flower white.

Tailed Blue

Those dainty little blue and white butterflies are called Eastern Blue-tailed Butterfly.  See the little tail on the bottom wing?  When the wings are spread, the boys are blue, but the females are slate grey.

Milkweed Comes in White

Large patches of white can be found in the meadow.  These wildflowers are Whorled Milkweed.

Wild Quinine and Purple Milkweed

Have you noticed the bouquets of pearls growing along the creek path?  These are Wild Quinine and have no petals.  

There are several varieties of milkweeds at the park.  I think this one may be Purple Milkweed.  It grows behind the soccer field along the creek.

Sweet Cicely

Found a new-to-me flower along the forest edge at the first bridge.  I believe this is a Sweet Cicely, also known as a Clayton's Sweetroot.

White Flower, Red Baneberry

In the shadows of the forest, white flowers look brilliant when the occasional shafts of light hit them.  Curiously enough, this white beauty is Red Baneberry.

Shooting Stars

The Shooting Stars are beginning to 'shoot' up.

Pussytoes!

Found some Pussytoes in the meadow along the vacant lot on the corner of Boone and 42nd Avenue.  This intriguing wildflower is one of the few that is either male or female, not both.  If I'm not mistaken, these are female.

Trillium

Finally found the patch of Nodding Trillium people have been telling me about.

Silver and Gold

Many of the White Poplar leaves have turned gold.  Yet, they are still silver on the underside.

Black, then White

There are small patches of black along the creek path.  These are patches of Wild White Indigo.  The plants springing from her seeds will be milky white in the spring.

Summer Flowers

Only rare remnants remain of the spring flowers.  Summer flowers are coming in full force.  Like an accent of lace, the vine, Hedge Bindweed, climbs and wraps round and over small patches here and there.  
Another new arrival is closer to the ground.  Prairie Onion flowers are also opening.

Duk Duk days are getting a rainy start, but the day looks to clear up and be beautiful.

Great Egret

A small island of debris seemed the perfect fishing spot for this Great Egret.  But I observed only a couple small catches before it flew away.  Such a pretty white bird, some people call them angel birds

Canada Anemone

Canada Anemone have been popping up along the lake shore near the outlet.  Bet you didn't know we had some Canada at Northwood Park.
