Red, Unexpected

At first glance, the red on this small tree looked like red flowers. Closer inspection proved otherwise.

Warm Colors of Winter

Temperatures were warmer today, reaching above freezing. On the gravel road the freshly melted snow uncovered a small chip of bright orange agate.
Some of the berries of a wildflower have kept their red.
The berries near the pavilion have been covered with ice that melted off the roof. Their red is well preserved.
Enjoy the temporary warmth,

Instars
Foliage near the lake was a clustering spot for Box Elder Bug instars Sunday morning. Instars are nymph stages of growth. The photo above includes several instar stages.
It wasn't easy to determine if these were Box Elder Bugs or Milkweed Bugs. After comparing to a number of photos though, I believe these are the Box Elder Bugs.
Although these bugs are generally considered a nuisance, the bits of bright red clustered among the green are interesting and the contrast kind of pretty to look at.
Enjoy!

Sumac Turning Red
Summer is progressing and signs of autumn are starting a little here and there. The Staghorn Sumac is reddening. Some people gather the fruit from this and brew a tart tea.
Enjoy!
